February FOOD shop of the month
'Something has to change' - she said
'I'm not giving up growing potatoes' - he said
'Why?' - she said
'Because I love it' - he said
And so began the challenge... how do we change, but stay the same?
Ballymakenny Farm is owned and run by Maria and David Flynn. They grow 6 varieties of Speciality/Heritage Potatoes on their farm in Drogheda, also some seasonal Speciality Veg. “Husband and Wife Farming our way through life…”
Maria asked David to buy some purple violetta potato seed after a vegetable grower asked her “why don’t you grow for chefs instead of shops?”
“It tickled my interest to set up a hobby. And I was going to go up to Dublin in my Toyota Avensis with my purple potatoes in my boot.”
“Maria’s passion for her potatoes is something you don’t come across very often and it shows in her product.”
Alex Green, Eipic Belfast.
Maria and David offer six varieties of potatoes; Mayan Rose, Pink Fir Apple, Red Emmalie, Violetta, Dathúil and Gemson Salad Potatoes.
One year later...
"Our wonderful Violetta Potatoes have been on the best menus in the country, used in the best kitchens and worked with by the best chefs.
Every season now, we have different varieties of heirloom/speciality potatoes to offer so please pay us a visit, see the potatoes, meet us (and talk potatoes) and check our brand new Spud Shack!
Staying the same but changing, we are still growing what we love and securing a future for generations to come on Ballymakenny Farm!"
“This farm is more than land and crops; it's our family's passion and future!”
